Pagination category view

How to set the pagination for the category view? I tried the config settings but this won't change a thing. I have a lot of products in different categories, now the loading time is way to long.

If you want to display a pagination through your category view, you'll have to set a "Number of items" option with a lower value than your number of product/category that you have in your "Associated category" option.

What i mean is I have different categories, with each representing a couple of hunderd products. Now when i click on a menu which relates to a specific category all the products, a couple of hunderd, are opening all together. which means a very long loading time. I would like to show only 20 products for example per page, while the customer can use pagination to click through to the other products (remaining products in the category).

i tried to change the number of items to display per page but when i do so i only see the first page with the number of products i filled in. i'm not able to see the pagination option, to click to the next page with the rest of the products.
