I am trying to sell files which are available to downlaod after payment.
Is there a step by step tutorial how to offer paid downloads?

I think that you'll probably find a solution through this thread :

I think that the best solution to handle download file will be to enable your customer download space, through the "Enable customer download area" option of your "Hikashop->System->Configuration->'Main'" page.

The download space will allow your customer to see all their available download files and download them until they reach the download limit.

This download will be available through the "User control panel"

Note that you can create "Paid download", by :
- Creating a product through "Hikashop->Products"
- Adding a price through the price tab of your product page
- Adding a file through the file tab of your product page
So your customers will have to pay to download your file .

I have tried al options, but I cant get it right .

You'll be able to do it by :
- Creating a Joomla menu Item through "Control Panel->Menu manager->'Menu Items' tab->New"
- Setting the Menu Item Type option of your menu Item to User control panel

You have to add suffix to the module in the Joomla module options and then add css to your template file to customize the modules.
This is not related to HikaShop, so we can't help you more on that
