Greetings,

I have a cart for an organization that is selling shirts & hoodies as part of their merch.
There is a wide variety of colors & I need to figure out how to allow an option of Black or White screen printing on some items but only black or white on colors where the other option would not be readily visible.
Ex 1: Either black or white on a medium grey
Ex 2: Only black on a white shirt
Ex 3: Only white on a black shirt.
Is this even possible & if so, how?

Hi,

So let me rephrase to make sure what you want. You want to ask the customer to select the color of his product as well as the color of the text written on it, but you don't want to allow for some combinations which wouldn't be readily visible, is that correct ?

In that case, you can create two characteristics ("color" and "text color" for example), via the menu Products>Characteristics. And in each characteristic, you can enter all the colors you want to offer.
Then, in a product, add both characteristics, and under the variants tab, you'll be able to add the variants (combinations of both colors), you want to offer.
That way, if you have for example three colors: black, white, yellow, but you don't want to allow white on yellow or yellow on white, you can add these 4 variants:
- black and white
- white and black
- black and yellow
- yellow and black
On the product page, the users won't be able to select the combinations which you didn't add as variant in the product.

Note that to make it easier to setup, once you have a product configured like you want, you can use the "copy" button on the products listing to duplicate it along with its variants so that you don't have to reconfigure all the combinations each time.

Note also that instead of just a text with the color name, you can potentially use images, like explained here:

Oh boy, I already have 960 variants for each hoodie style & 480 for each shirt style.
So I have to add variants for:
1) 2 screen print colors
2) 20 different clothing colors
3) 6 items
4) 8 sizes

Yes??

If I export the DB into my text editor, is there a way to make the additions en masse?

Hi,

That indeed sounds like a lot of variants.
You can use the export/import to generate the variants.
However, maybe there is a clever way to do what you want by combining options / characteristics / custom item fields.
Could you describe in more details each option you need for each product ? How many choices ? Does the option selection impacts the price ? Does it impact the stock ? Do you want the image to change based on the selection ?

Hi,

Then, how about using an option for that selection:
- you create a characteristic "colors" with the available combinations of colors as values (for example "Black text on Ash Grey", "Black text on Blaze Orange", "White text on Blaze Orange", etc)
- you create an unpublished category
- you create a product "colors" in that category and add the "colors" characteristic to this product and add the corresponding variants
- in the main product, you add that "colors" product as an "option".

That way, you don't have to create variants in each main product, only for the option product (29 variants). And you can reuse the option product for all your main products.

Nicholas,
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you but I spent a day in the hospital.
I did what you suggested in your previous post but the cart is not recognizing the options.

Hi,

The cart module displays the error "The product Crest Colors: White is not available" when trying to add the product to the cart.
This indicates that there is a problem with the configuration of the "Crest Colors" product.
I suppose it's because you didn't enter a price in the product and you have the "display add to cart button for free products" setting turned off in the HikaShop configuration.
In that case, the system will refuse adding to the cart options without a price.
